Let’s be honest about the Muppets
Now I have yet to see the new Muppet Movie, but I know lipstick on a pig when I see it, (sorry Miss Piggy!) and the Muppets are pushing a left-wing agenda.
The Muppet Show (1976-1981) …
Psych. Co and Occupy Wall Street
The great thing the truly amazing thing, about the Occupy Wall Street movement is its lack of unified voice. Every person who is a part of it or who seriously thinks about it is forced to decide for themselves if and how the status quo needs to be changed. Brilliant.
In following the Occupy Wall Street protests and the sympathy demonstrations around the world, I had to consider my own thoughts on the matter, and I came up with one obvious, glaring, pernicious facet of the world we live in: Corporate Personhood…
Thoughts on Occupation, Patriotism, and Semantics
I’ve noticed a very interesting development over the last few weeks since the Occupy movement has really taken off. At first the criticism was that the protestors were vague and didn’t know what they were protesting. This became a pretty hard myth to push once it became very clear their position was quite simple: It is unfair that one group of people (billionaires) and one subset of society (corporations) are held…
Occupy Everything: My Hippie Perspective
This isn’t a dirty hippie movement (we’re totally welcome, obvs). This is not, as Fox News’ Kimberly Guilfoyle called it, “Woodstock meets Burning Man, meets people with absolutely no purpose.” This is what it looks like when the people are dissatisfied, but still have hope and faith. Not faith in the system as it stands, not hope that a super mega Platonian robot will rise above, hit a magic Utopia button making it rain sparkles and house deeds, but a conviction that if enough of us believe the same things that we can create a positive change…
Welcome to Place du Peuple: #Occupy Arrives in Montreal
I’m a big talker and it can be hard to get me off the couch. For Occupy Montreal, I wanted to stand and be counted. Coming out of Square Vic all alone with my first ever protest sign, I was relieved to find a friendly campsite, replete with folks from all walks of life talking to strangers who looked nothing like them. It was around 4p.m, and everyone seemed settled in, with tarps strung through the treetops creating a roof above the campsite.
I was glad to see they took the lead from other live-ins…
Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies Conference
This Thursday and Friday the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) will be hosting a conference on the media’s role in halting Mass Atrocities and to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) initiative by the United Nations. For those familiar with the terrain of activism in mass media, it is common knowledge that spreading awareness is one of the keys to preventing crimes and injustices…
Institutionalized Graft Part I
Let me get this straight. Tories do not favour so-called socialist state-economic planning??? That said, we’re in the midst of a global economic depression and Canada must find ways to stimulate its own economy in order to survive. Ergo, the federal government must set an economic policy in place that allows core industries to continue operations while further providing stimulus to at-risk industries. As it so happens, the Tories have decided…
Occupy Wall Street Goes Global
Occupy Wall Street and the so called 99% movement got a big boost this past Saturday as hundreds of thousands of citizens from the developed world marched…
Protesters occupy downtown park in Toronto version of Occupy Wall Street
Hundreds of people were still gathering in St. James Park on the east end of downtown Toronto late Saturday for the Occupy Toronto protests inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Earlier, reports said about 3,000 people rallied and marched from Toronto’s financial district to the park, the group’s chosen occupation site, at the corner of Jarvis Street and King Street.
The movement, which is against increasing financial inequality and excessive corporate influence in politics, arrived in Canada with…
We are The 99% and So Are You
At five in the morning on October 14, my Montreal based roommate Kamee Abrahamian (producer of the Blood Ballet Cabaret) and my native New York self crawled out of bed to head to Wall Street. We heard that chaos was going to go down before the sun even came up. We thought we would witness some arrests and be part of the fight for whatever these protests are about…
Why Occupy?
On Saturday, October 15th, well over a thousand cities around the world, including Montreal, will fuel the “Occupy Movement” by hosting, or intensifying, their very own “Occupy (insert city here.)” The occupation of these various cities will go on for as long as it takes for our governments to acknowledge that there is a problem with our economic systems.
If your reading this, you’ve heard about Occupy Wall Street, let me tell you why it matters…
#OccupyWallStreet Photos, Video & More
The Occupy Wall Street protests are now entering their fourth week. The movement which began in New York City on September 17th has garnered the support of most of the big unions, numerous celebrities, intellectuals, the hactivist group Anonymous, and even some key politicians.
Occupy Wall Street has been growing rapidly and picking up steam as protests pop-up in more and more cities across North America and even Europe (the Occupy Montreal protest begins on Sat Oct 15th). Major media outlets have even started covering this movement seriously…
Half Moon Run pt.1
Begging for an autograph on the $5 demo she purchased a few seconds ago, the attractive concert attendee broke her revering gaze on the members of Half Moon Run for several precious seconds to ask me if I knew their names. I inquired which one, and in a sultry tone, she let me know that it didn’t matter… because they were all sexy.
But thirty minutes ago, she, along with the dozens of other converted groupies, had no idea Half Moon Run existed…
Ryan Gosling continues his rise to mega stardom in the L.A. gangster flick Drive
Hard to believe that a former star of the YTV show Breaker High is now one of the sexiest and most talented actors working in Hollywood, but it’s true. Ryan Gosling has already been in two of my favorite films from the past year (Blue Valentine and Crazy, Stupid Love) and he keeps the trend going with Drive. (I am also eagerly awaiting the soon to be released Ides of March, which I heard at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is Gosling’s best bet for some Oscar love). You better watch out Ryan Reynolds. Sure you may have been married to Scarlett Johansson…
Dexter Season 6 Preview: Leaked Episodes, Possible Spoilers
Dexter. Anyone who has ever watched it has loved it. And now it’s back! Firstly, get ready. As mentioned in the previews, Dexter is feeling like his “old self again” which can only mean one thing: awesomeness. Arguably the best season happened to be the very first where Dexter had little emotions, his life revolved around killing, and the last thing on his mind was his family. Now, with Rita dead, Lumen gone…
The War on Drugs is Going Strong
“Got the feeling that I can’t move without sliding. I’m a thousand miles behind, with a hundred more to climb so it’s you I hope survives without fighting” are the heavy words setting the tone for The War on Drugs recently released Slave Ambient. Juxtaposed with layered melodic guitars and Adam Granduciel’s calm, reassuring voice, the opening song Best Night actually leaves you feeling uplifted. It could be their uncanny ability of combining melancholy lyrics with Dylan-like ballads that established their albums as being some of the best road trip music out there. A large part could also be attributed to their method of song building…
