Dexter Season 5 Wrap-up – The build-up, the finale, the disappointment

Firstly, I would just like to thank 1HDTV.net for providing an excellent live stream of Dexter for the entire season. I really couldn’t wait the extra hour for the show to air in Canada, so being able to watch it live online with a US Stream was a huge plus in my opinion, and I recommend anyone who is a fan of the show and doesn’t have The Movie Network or Showtime to check it out, because the feed is quality.

Season 5 of Dexter started off slow. Very, very slow. So slow a few people I know stopped watching by episode 4. I, however, persevered, and decided to give the season a chance in hope that something interesting would happen. Something dynamic. Something changing. Something incredible. So, as the episodes went on, the show got better. It picked up well, making those earlier episodes worth the build-up, like when you’re slowly moving up to the top of a rollercoaster. And then suddenly, bang! Shit got good. And like good sex, you went at it and at it, faster and faster, harder and harder, expecting that all so incredible climax and grand finale! And… And….

What the fuck was that? Really? What do you call that? Did Disney suddenly buy out Showtime? What was this happy, generic, boring, cliché ending? What do you even call this? What? What the hell was with all the plot holes? Allow me to provide a list of the number of things that made no sense with the ending:

1. In the finale, Debra fired a warning shot at the two vigilantes behind the plastic sheet (Dexter and Lumen). Wouldn’t the police at the crime scene notice the bullet somewhere in the room and reach a verdict that Debra was there?

2. Although Dexter and Lumen had planned on taking Jordan Chase’s car to get away, you expect me to believe that no one noticed them driving it? And where would they ditch the car? Surely Dexter’s car was back at Miami metro.

3. Dexter crashed a stolen car which he hijacked near the site where Stan Liddy was murdered. That car would still be at the campsite when the police arrived. Dexter’s blood and DNA is clearly in the car, seeing as his head was bleeding when he crashed it, and wouldn’t the police just put the car being last seen close to the scene where it was stolen? Really? Does Miami Metro do any work? It seems Dexter kills everyone they bring in. Like really? How does Laguerta even still have a job? Aside from “giving the best blowjobs in Miami”… give me a break.

4. Quinn asked for a lawyer, and then gets cleared, and everyone acts like nothing even happened. He doesn’t say any information, nothing gets shared, and Quinn only tells Deb that he didn’t kill the guy, but somehow, someway, everyone seems to be okay with the fact that he asked for a lawyer. Normally that’s a pretty big sign that something is fucking wrong. And come on, did Quinn even tell Debra anything about Dexter? It seems like everything is just so… so… ugh.

5. I clearly remember that nanny texting Dexter to see if he wanted a magician for Harrison’s party and Liddy, who had Dexter’s phone, answered YES. Where was this magician at the end? Like really.

6. Why did Jordan Chase only watch those girls get raped? I remember someone in a chat room on 1HDTV.net suggesting that he’s a eunuch. But none of this gets explained. We are left wondering about all this nonsense! It’s like everyone is blind. Did the writers fall asleep at the wheel this year? And why is Harry still a force ghost?!

7. So, Lumen just got up and left. Hurray. I didn’t like her, even though her character began to grow on me, she was a bigger complainer and whiner than Quebec Separatists on Canada Day. And why did she even leave? Was she having her period and wanted to get as far away from people as possible because she’d do what Dexter taught her and kill them? Or was she *not* getting her period? One possible scenario is that she could be pregnant. And if she gets back with Dexter, it could trigger a full-circle situation like how Dexter was with his brother. Hmmm.

I understand the writers wanted to go with a more “complete” closure to the season like seasons one, two and three, but at least with those, there weren’t so many loose ends. Yes, things are open-ended for next season, but can we really expect something like Jordan Chase’s sexuality even being a topic? Maybe I’m still hungover from Season 4′s amazing ending, but this ending just felt so empty. There was no major change to how the show is played out. What the show needed was something to really change the whole dynamic of it. Something critical. Something major. Not only that, but it’s not like the audience even really knows how much Quinn knows about Dexter. What the show needed in that final exchange between Dexter and Quinn was some key statement. Even a wink, followed by an “I know your secret” would have been satisfying. But no. Not even that!

Aside from this brutal ending, the season in general had some upsides. The lack of a key main antagonist, while still having enough villains to fill a good-vs-evil role was quite appealing. Having five men fill that void was a smart move to say the least. I mean, having someone match Trinity would be a difficult feat, and it’ll be interesting to see what direction they take for season 6. Personally, I think they need someone similar to the Ice Truck Killer. But that’s just me, and maybe you too, not the horrible band U2, however, mind you. Fuck no.

Although the show in general took a step in a different direction, I have to say that I miss the Dexter from season one. He was just more badass. But as the seasons moved on, he’s grown a conscience of sort, and although this is good, it hasn’t been really used to fit the darker themes the series originally had. Now let’s see if season 6 can return the show to its glory.

Oh, and does anyone else find it funny how Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are getting divorced? All I have to say about that is that more than likely, the sex wasn’t killer. (rimshot) But in all honesty, I guess this is a message to people that you should never marry your sister… even if she’s only your sister on TV. Well, foster sister, but regardless. Maybe she’ll get killed off next season? And if the reports are true about those two actors hating each other, then they should probably use this to their advantage in season 6. Hell, have Quinn and Debra go apeshit on Dexter for some reason. Have the world turn against him. It’ll be fucking nuts. Nuts like honeynuts. But coco like coco puffs. And greeeat like Frosted Flakes. But without the flakes. I’d rather the writers show up. Divorces can be fun too. Filled with drama, chaos, broken lamps, broken bones, annoyed neighbors, evil garden gnomes, blood, sweat, tears, intense makeup sex, horrible makeup sex, broken condoms, pregnancy, child support, lawyers, evil mother in-laws, abortions, more make-up sex, more pregnancies, and before you know it, everyone dies. Happy New Year!

On a side note, I really have to say that Masuka needs his own spin-off show. The character is comedy gold. All the sexual innuendos and random stories are flawless. Really. Probably the most hilarious character on the show by far.

Anyway, the season wasn’t bad. But the ending really, really hurt it in my opinion. It was like the writers tried to finish their own puzzle, despite not even having all the pieces. Maybe they were stretched for time? Maybe the show needed more minutes? (More minutes? They need a better cell phone service provider!) *crickets* I don’t know, but it left so many of the small, but rather noticeable key factors out of the equation, and because so many of the questions are more character and season specific, they really can’t be touched upon later.

It is what it is. Good. But it needed more cowbell. Oh, and remember: TAKE IT!

Good write-up, Mike. And I agree, Masuka is great.
