Drinks, Lights and Music — Oh My!
For this week’s column, I wanted to really step outside the box in fact, I wanted to forget the box completely and review something the exact opposite of software and hardware sort of. On Saturday night / Sunday morning, I found myself at a nightclub in Hull, QC, known as Le Volt.
The plan was for me to attend my friend’s roommate’s eighteenth birthday, but she dropped out, even on her birthday. Nonetheless, a few of us (all university students) met on campus and took a taxi over to Hull to party it up.
I will not be using anyone’s real name besides my own, considering some of the people I was with ended up using fake IDs, although the majority were able to get in without using under-the-table tactics. Anyway, here is my review.

First of all, if you’ve been to an amusement park at any point in your life, chances are you have stood in line for a good amount of time. Let me just say that to actually get into the club, my friends and I ended up standing in line for what could very well have been forty-five minutes. At one point, it began to rain like crazy, but the bouncers kept the line how it was: at a stand-still.
A little, rather humorous, detail about this event was that one of my buddies was extremely paranoid about his ID to the point where he was asking people he had never met before if he would get in. Now, I have bad anxiety sometimes, but I was beginning to think this guy could be worse than me, which is extremely sad. Nevertheless, he ended up being allowed in, followed soon thereafter by my friends and finally myself.
I was a little worried about one thing: the fact I was using my health card from Ontario. I had heard from a few sources that English-speaking people from out-of-town wouldn’t be allowed in. This was not the case, however, which means either I had a decent bouncer or the accounts I had read were incorrect. Thus, it earns a few extra points.
The inside of Le Volt was moderately nice. Nothing too extravagant, but for the most part, not too shabby. The music choice, although not my forte, was actually tolerable and mixed nicely. Definitely easy to dance to for most people. Let me just say that in order for me to “dance” like some people, I need to get something to drink first.
Alright, so here is where things begin to get weird. There are two bars. I approached one of them and asked a female bartender for some Heineken, but alas, she says they do not serve that. Eager to get a drink in me, I asked for a Budweiser and enjoyed.
A little bit later, I went to the other bar and once again asked for a Heineken. This time, I was able to drink my favourite beer and enjoy its smooth taste. By this time I had a lot of change on me and asked for a rum and coke.
Here is where the club loses points. I must have handed the bartender about eight dollars in change and I got nothing back. By this time, I didn’t really care, downed my drink and asked for another one, paying with a five. Somehow, I got a dollar back as my change. Is there any consistency here? I think not.
Anyway, the drinks were good and managed to enable me to dance, which I tried to do, to the best of my ability, only to fail miserably but that’s that. You can’t expect someone who sits on a computer all day downloading melodic death metal and playing poker to have epic dance moves, can you? Of course not. But I will say that the people inside of the club were pretty decent in a sense that no one was too outrageous.
Oh, and the whole feeling of time slowing down due to flashing lights and heavy dance music was truly evident here something I love to experience, because it is rather surreal. So as far as lights go pretty solid in my book.
Well, long story short, I ended up getting pretty wasted. Luckily, a few of my friends helped me out and didn’t seem too appalled by my rather weird comments, such as life being like a bowl of rice and about me somehow having a wife and kids to come home to.
Nonetheless, they were pretty cool with it and the girl I was with is pretty good-looking, not to mention having phenomenal grammar two things which go together like peanut butter and chocolate… or energy drinks and vodka. You decide.
Point being (and just a reminder to everyone reading this): when you go out for the night, go with people you can trust and people who won’t mind if you have too much to drink. Last time I went with someone who got pissed off that I was drunk, well, I still have the bruises to prove it.
Long story short… it was worth the wait and the fifteen (give or take a few) dollars to get in. I just wish the bartender hadn’t of taken all my money I could easily have had another drink. Besides that, I recommend Le Volt if you’re ever in the Hull area or in downtown Ottawa.
