Rebecca Black’s Friday Explained

Rebecca Black’s Friday For Dummies

In my time spent on Facebook, Twitter and StumbleUpon, I have found countless images, parodies and insults aimed at Rebecca Black’s song Friday. Not to be confused with ‘Black Friday’, this song is more than just about what day of the week it is and where to sit in a car. In order to truly grasp this song, we must read into the lyrics and examine what is truly means to be living a Friday.

Without further ado, the first verse:

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends

To the untrained eye, someone could just assume this to be a regular routine for a young girl. Waking up in the morning, going downstairs and eating breakfast. But what these lyrics truly mean is so much more. Naturally, this song identifies the troubles of being a teenage girl and having to look the part, act womanly, and impress members of the opposite sex ‘ or same sex, depending on how we look at it. It could also express wartimes in today’s society. Waking up at 7am, being fresh, eating cereal and catching the ride to the command center. Not to be confused with Good Morning Vietnam. Also, the fact that something is tickin and everyone is rushing could perhaps suggest the fact that a bomb is set to explode and Rebecca is actually part of an army bombsquad, like in the movie The Hurt Locker.

How can you mean people make fun of a song that
commends the brave soldiers in the army who risk their lives for you people?! How?!

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

The seats obviously demonstrate a hostile negation with terrorists. She must choose the right seat to sit down in, otherwise her friends driving the car will die or the car will explode like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Not that terrorists celebrate that holiday. Really, Rebecca is risking her life for the good of mankind. What seat will she take? She can’t make her mind up.

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Friday is supposed to be the day she was scheduled to leave Iraq, Iran or wherever there is sand… the beach, perhaps? And be reunited with her family. This is why Friday is so important to her. And for people fighting overseas, counting the days are better than counting the day until Christmas, because you get the best present of all going home.

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

This is where the song gets different. Rebecca has arrived home and has had too much to drink and is now partying. She is glad to be home and is now fucking everyone at the club after witnessing her squad get murdered. She is now engaging in a serious conflict and is having fun with the weekend fast approaching. She is putting out more than everyone can put in.

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right
I got this, you got this
Now you know it

The song now demonstrates the dangers of drinking and driving. They are trying to sober up by driving fast and wanting time to fly. In reality, 7:45 does not mean 7:45 in the morning, but rather 7:45 PM in some random timezone, which somehow makes it late at night where she is. This alone makes this video hardcore and people should understand how deep it is.

Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
We-we-we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today

The affects of drinking too much obviously mess with Rebecca’s mind and the song demonstrates this quite well. She states the obviously because it’s all she knows how to state in her current state. The song turns into how drinking to escape problems in life leads to unwanted pregnancies, drug use, and a fucked up mind.

Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes after…wards
I don’t want this weekend to end

Again, by only being able to state the basics, Rebecca enters a state of being beyond the point of no return. Her mind is corrupted, and the only thing can save her now happens to fall on a Sunday that being church. With her friends dead, her body ruined and her mind forever altered, Rebecca begins hoping that Sunday will come and it will stay Sunday forever so she can be reunited with God.

R-B, Rebecca Black
So chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)
In the back seat (In the back seat)
I’m drivin’, cruisin’ (Yeah, yeah)
Fast lanes, switchin’ lanes
Wit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)
(C’mon) Passin’ by is a school bus in front of me
Makes tick tock, tick tock, wanna scream
Check my time, it’s Friday, it’s a weekend
We gonna have fun, c’mon, c’mon, y’all

The black man is obviously the man Rebecca had unprotected sex with “which is ironic because it was black on black. This man becomes the father of Rebecca’s baby, but it is also to note that this man is a stalker, drug dealer, gangbanger, and all around bad dude. He is also a pedophile considering he is following a school bus. This leads to the trouble of not really knowing who someone is which in Rebecca’s case means she’s in serious shit.

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

In closing, this song ends with everyone being reminded that Fridays can be fun, but they can also lead to serious problems. In this video and song, it’s good to remember that partying can be good, but be responsible. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. You’ll get fucked in the end.

I also suggest people picking up a copy of Faderhead’s album Black Friday which is far superior to this song.

I feel pretty bad for the poor kid. She’s 13! Her parents gave her a vanity gift, the studio gave her an awful piece of music – and now this is attached to her name forever.

Excuse yourself. Make sure you know how to define terrorist before you talk about them. “Anywhere there is sand?”
Iran or Iraq. You wish you even knew shit all about such countries.
And really, who the eff sings about the army! Let her find something better to do with her life than sing about the army.

  • Mike Gwilliam

    @ray:

Actually, sand and terrorism were mentioned in different paragraphs. I don’t see where this article says that when there are terrorists there is automatically sand. Care to explain?

Actually, I don’t wish I knew ‘shit’ about such countries.

Also, before you reply, look up the definition of satire on the internet.
