Virtual DJ 7 and Format Factory – Hurray for Software Reviews

By on January 12, 2011 – 9:04 am2 Comments

Have you ever wanted to try your luck at DJing, but didn’t want to go out in public and make a complete idiot out of yourself? If so, lucky for you, there’s a program I’ve been wanting to review for awhile called Virtual DJ 7. The thing about this program is that it can take any track you have in your music library and edit it, remix it and mash it up with another song all in realtime. This is great if you want to experiment with songs and create something dynamic.

The typical features are all here: effects, volume control, pitch, tempo, etc and they all work very well. In addition to the built-in features, Virtual DJ allows you to download other effects that help create your ultimate remix. The only downside I found with this is that everything is done in realtime. It’s not like Virtual DJ is the ultimate editing machine. Everything you do and record is done in realtime, meaning you have to be fast.

It’s a program that’s easy to learn, but difficult to master. Sometimes I’ll find myself just editing the pitch, tempo and adding in some sort of echo effect and letting the track play by itself. And I have to say, as simple as it is to do this, some songs sound a lot better when this happens. It’s funny how a simple change of the tempo can make a song sound that much more… interesting.

The issue that I have writing this review is the fact that everything you’d expect to be included with the software is already here. It’s not like there’s some revolutionary new feature that’ll make you cum with joy. There’s nothing of the sort. It’s just a good solid product that’s fun if you want to try your luck at DJing, recording your attempts and then maybe putting them online. Kind of like what I did with this song by Nine Inch Nails. It’s not much, but it’s something. And something is normally better than nothing, unless that something is a kick in the face followed by a knee to the groin. Erm.. there’s two somethings there, but you get the point. Anyway…

Would I recommend Virtual DJ 7? Sure do. But don’t pay for it. Who pays for things anymore? You could probably torrent it or something. Then again, it’s not like I decided to download it that way… *shifty eyes*. Give it a shot. If you like it, buy it. Fair enough?

The other thing I wanted to touch on in this review is a converter that everyone should own if you find yourself converting files like crazy. It’s called Format Factory and this is a free program that will literally convert just about anything. No, it can’t convert your girlfriend’s Cs into Double Ds, but if it did, then it wouldn’t be free. So count your losses and save for surgery.

Format Factory lets you convert WMVs to AVIs, MP3s to MP4snand even video files into Gifs. I’m not kidding. Now we can finally take some clips from JC Sunshine and make them into Gifs, put them on Giftube.com and watch our viewer count climb like crazy.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t have Format Factory installed on your computer. It’s free, it’s amazing, and just like how VLC ‘plays’ everything, Format Factory ‘converts’ mostly everything. One of the real gems of the internet.

I concur, Format Factory rocks! Also, it has been used on JC Sunshine, informally that is.

While the show has always been edited on Macs (sorry) I’ve used FF to convert the flv web versions to avi so I could burn it on VCD to play for my mom.

Hey Mike, the cutesie pornboy crap adds nothing to your reviews…although I happen to like Format Factory I never would have tried it based on your “clever” comments. It’s guys like you that give the internet a bad name and make me want to keep my kids off it. Try just sticking to the subject.
