Cinema L’Amour Hits the Road
For those of you who don’t know Cinema L’Amour, they are a quirky Montreal band, lovingly described as nerdy loop-rock. (It’s also a porno theatre on St. Laurent and Duluth, from which they got their name.) The band is composed of Dorian Scheidt and Chis Kavanagh who both love experimenting with their music and exploring rhythmic complexity and texture. They are currently on a east-coast Canadian tour and ForgetTheBox will be following them
Burning Casa to the Ground: Barn Burner and The Great Sabitini @ Casa Del Popolo
I have never seen a metal show at Casa del Popolo – but that doesn’t mean it never happens, or that it wouldn’t be a fantastic, mind-blowing experience. Initially, I was excited to hear that The Great Sabatini and Barn Burner were playing a show together, but how would their heavy sound fit into this smaller sized venue? It’s not like Casa is known for metal shows…
Caroline Keating Shiny Debut: Silver Heart
Last week Montreal-based musician Caroline Keating launched her debut album Silver Heart to a sold out show at Chapelle St.Louis. The small beautiful chapel was packed with people; some fans were even crammed onto windowsills, listening intently …

“The term folk music is something that I think about a lot”, says Matt Large co-director of Hello Darlin’ Productions during our chat at Les Copains D’Abord where we talked about music, his projects, and …

Sounds of Spain and The Rainbow Connection
There are a few things that I learned about myself at Canadian Music Week: 1) I wish I was a Muppet 2) Spanish rockabilly is officially my new favourite kind of music. 3) Life would be way cooler if I could use a press pass to breeze through any tough situation or long line ups in life. Sigh…
The Pinyin Pals
In the last few years, I’ve been increasingly interested in Montreal-based musicians who occupy alternative spaces in terms of their music making. I am most interested in those musicians who walk the fine line between a musical career and a musical hobby, who question what it is to be a musician and when music “counts”. I want to see how musicians construct themselves and how they choose to go about it.
The Pinyin Pals captured my attention…
Beers, Buds, and Your Favorite Dancing Shoes: Canadian Music Fest
As I made my way into the packed Horseshoe tavern on Friday night, a giant smile was plastered across my face. Not only do some of my favorite people live here, but after reporting on the film fest portion of Canadian Music Week last year I’ve been eagerly looking forward to returning to Toronto to covering the main attraction: music! glorious music!
Caroline Keating Debut Album Launch: Silver Heart
I can barely contain my excitement over the upcoming debut album launch for Caroline Keating’s Silver Heart (2012). Over the last few years, I have had the pleasure of interviewing Caroline Keating a few times …

Yardlets @ Canadian Music Week
The last night of Canadian Music Fest, after having gone to bed at 11am that morning, one can say I was not in the best of shape. So with almost no sleep it was any wonder I found myself dozing off to some folk music band. I had to go take an emergency disco nap to keep going. It was 10pm and none of my Forget The Box colleagues believed I’d wake up from that nap.
Trus’me playing at Salon Daomé this Thursday
Trus’me didn’t take too long to win the hearts of most electronic music lovers, including trend-setters like Gilles Peterson and Rob da Bank. Coming from Manchester, a city with a rich history of vibrant electronic music that gave birth to acid house, he pursued the tradition of bringing love to the dancefloor. His sets are always very deep, rich and soulfull. He started releasing tracks on the Stillove4music label and now he’s signed to Prime Numbers. He often produces tracks in homage to the old-school disco, funk and soul…
The Long Musical Walk: Heidy’s CMW Night 1
It’s official! The Forget the box team is at CMW and there’s no way back. Personally, it’s my first year attending this event and the least I can say is that I wasn’t prepared for such an intense weekend. The whole city is turned upside down. Bars are closing at 4am, people from everywhere are gathering together, every single venue in the city has at least four bands playing every night and, of course, everybody is on a beer diet. Here’s the report of my first Canadian Music Week night…
Galaxie, Dirty Nil, Half Moon Run, Teenage Kicks & Tim Chaisson at Canadian Music Fest
So begins another crazy year at Canadian Music Week in Toronto and I have to wonder: Will the first night deteriorate into a booze filled nightmarish dream leading to liver damage and a splitting hangover? Or will the music prevail and carry this evening out to the elation of national pride…
Intensive Care: Conquering Music Lovers One Step at a Time
On Thursday, local band Intensive Care is launching their EP at Casa del Popolo. These guys are playing cinematic music infused with just the right touch of rock. Like intensive-care specialists, they’re crafting their sound very carefully; one step at the time. They will be joined by Technical Kidman and Golden Isles. For $6, you get to see the show and go home with a copy of their new EP. Sounds like a sweet deal to me. Want to know to a little bit more before the concert? Here’s an interview I did with them…
