How Sega Got its Groove Back, and How Mario Got Some Tail

February 9, 2012 – 6:28 pm |

This week’s column comes from Andrew Braid, who is quite skilled in the art of writing. I was thrilled when he said yes to a guest review, and here it is in all its glory. And it’s no typical review either: this is a double dose of awesomeness. By this point in its life span, the gaming industry has become more and more like the Hollywood movie industry. Namely, ideas get rehashed and remade constantly, to the point where it’s almost the only output; justified as being the only way…

NHL 12: Is It Better? Yes, but how much?

January 11, 2012 – 5:07 pm | 2 Comments

Hockey is probably the easiest sport to translate into a video game. It’s action-packed, it’s fast-paced and the physicality of the sport itself can make for some incredible moments. Enter NHL 12, EA’s newest hockey video game. I’ve reviewed NHL 10 and NHL 11 these past two years, and now, here we are again. Each game has been better than its previous incarnation, but does NHL 12 warrant a purchase if you already own the former games? Find out in this review…

Nintendo Set To Enter Realm of e-Readers

January 2, 2012 – 3:27 pm | 6 Comments

With such a crazy New Year, the last thing I expected to hear was anything about the Wii U. My good friend in Los Angeles who works for a software developer claims Nintendo approached them and offered them assistance in porting and publishing some software from iOS to the Wii U so it can be played on the Wii U’s touchscreen controller. Due to non-disclosure agreements, I can’t get into full details of what was discussed because it would reveal my source…

It’s been awhile since I did one of these, but I figured this year I’d bring it back. If you haven’t already gotten your hands on these titles, be sure to do so this holiday season. Boxing Day may be over, but there should be great sales all week. Here are ten things you should totally check out…

Nintendo’s Wii-U Price Leaked by Australian EB Games Site

December 12, 2011 – 3:52 pm | 3 Comments

Just today, EB Games Australia has listed Nintendo’s new console, The Wii-U, for pre-order on its website for a total of $600. It is important to note that both the US and Australian dollar are roughly the same right now and this price should apply for US residents too. Whether this was a mistake made by the website or intentional, we are unsure at the current time. The console is set to be released in 2012. It is also anticipated that a starting line-up of games for the console with be revealed at E3 2012. Be sure to check back to this page for more information on this breaking story as it develops…

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare series has become a world-wide phenomenon. It’s one of the best selling games of all time and has truly dominated the first-person shooter market for quite some time. Its multiplayer has always withstood the test of time and its campaigns often leave something to be desired; but is this also true for the new game? Enter Modern Warfare 3. Battlefield 3 Review – The Definitive Reason to Book off Duty

October 28, 2011 – 8:01 pm | One Comment

Battlefield 3 for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is a must-own shooter this year. It enters the fray looking to become king of the first-person shooters, and doesn’t disappoint by any stretch. It’s a fast-paced, anything-but-arcadey, fantastic representation of modern combat and it’s worth the price of admission…

Prelude To Launch Day: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 vs Battlefield 3

September 18, 2011 – 10:00 am |

If there’s one thing that has gotten more hype than anything else in gaming since E3 2011 (excluding Skyrim and the Wii U), it has been the inevitable confrontation and sales war between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3. The battle lines have been drawn, fan boys are constantly flaming, and threads all over the internet have been created about this upcoming war to end all wars. Forget North Korea attacking South Korea that’s not important; it’s all about video game versus video game for the right to be called King Of The First Person Shooter…

Five Different Relationships We Have With Video Games

August 17, 2011 – 1:03 pm | One Comment

The One Night Stand

This particular video game is good for two things: its graphics and gameplay. While it won’t take very long to beat, it has enough content to make it worth its rental price tag. It’s good in bed and it’s really sexy. Pretty much, she’s a game like Vanquish or Bayonetta. Or Resident Evil 5. A game you can play through in a weekend, but have a lot of fun with…

Did Call of Duty Actually Help Train A Psychopath in Norway?

July 26, 2011 – 11:50 am | One Comment

With all the talk of the Norway terrorist attacks, right-wing extremism and now, of all things, video games being brought into the equation, I felt it was my duty as Forget The Box’s Video Game Specialist to shed my own light on the situation. As reported earlier in an article by IGN.com, Anders Behring Breivik had apparently written in his manifesto that the popular first-person shooter Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 had helped him in preparing for his assault…
