PRP Benefit is a grassroots organization that aims to promote awareness of mental health issues. This year will be the 5th edition of the concert series and will feature performances by What If Elephants, Stefanie Parnell, Krystale and Faux Play. All proceeds will be donated to Friends for Mental Health, a non-profit community organization that was established to help families deal with mental illness by providing counseling, community support, crisis assistance, activities for kids and families, referrals and by promoting public awareness.

Today would have been the 10-year anniversary of Montreal punk band Trigger Effect and the band has put together a final show in homage to their late vocalist Nick Babeu, who passed away in November.

A new monthly event comes to us from the collective known as Witching Hour Events. To be held every new moon cycle, events feature short works by local filmmakers, performances by local bands of every genre, multimedia activities and visual arts. The event’s creators say it’s all in the spirit of exchanging ideas and information and sharing creative experiences to inspire change.

This version will feature performances by NooM, Light Bulb Alley, Bearmace, and Hoax. Attendees are even encouraged to bring a small instrument or other sound-making device to use during a short jam to honour the new moon.

Dressing like an alien for this edition is also encouraged.

Holiday Hooligans Xmaz Party @ Maz Bar

Christmas band the Holiday Hooligans are putting on a show at Maz Bar (5617 Sherbrooke o.) to benefit in-house charity the Maz Christmas Basket Fund. In addition to live holiday-themed music, there will be a raffle with some prizes provided by 514 BMX, Chez Geeks, and comic book store Komico. You can also get your photo taken with Santa for a small fee. All proceeds from the raffle, photos, and the $5 cover charge will go towards the bar’s Christmas basket fund, which provides food baskets for the less fortunate during the holiday season.

The event starts at 9 p.m., $5 cover charge.

You won’t regret seeing these shows this week.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12

Lonely Animals + Watch For Wolves + In Beliefs + Atsuko Chiba @ Il Motore

If you haven’t heard Atsuko Chiba’s new album yet (released last week), you should probably not waste any time and do it now. They are one of the most exciting new bands in Montreal’s experimental heavy music scene. Their live shows are completely entrancing and offer that little extra something that can’t be experienced just listening to the recording.

Doors at 8 p.m., tickets cost $8.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13

Indie Montreal Happy Hour Christmas Party w/ Beat Market @ Divan Orange

Our good friends over at Indie Montreal are throwing a happy hour Christmas party featuring the retro-electro stylings of Montreal duo Beat Market.

Doors at 5 p.m., free.

Cancer Bats + Red Fang + Indian Handcrafts + The Shrine @ Cabaret Mile End

Indian Handcrafts’ latest album Civil Disobedience For Losers is my favourite new discovery of the year. Seeing them play to an almost empty room last time they came to Montreal was a special experience. This time, they get to be part of a truly solid lineup, including fellow Sargent House label mates Red Fang and heavy-hitting musical veterans Cancer Bats.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15

Artsy Chicks + Cal Folger Day + Archery Guild @ Le Cagibi

This show has your weekly dose of psychedelia. The Artsy Chicks are a brand new Montreal band (they started this past spring) but they’ve already recorded a full-length album. They also come with an elaborate back-story that includes the theft of something called the Power Stone and an oncoming war.
